BIO:
Boy does ChewBarka(pronounced Chew-bark-a)(no he doesn’t bark a lot)have a story to tell!!
He was hit by a car, broke his leg taken to the humane shelter in Indianapolis. We aren’t sure if he chewed his tail off before or after he got to the shelter but it had to be amputated so he has just a stub for a tail but he wears it well he looks cute with no tail and it doesn’t bother him that he doesn’t have a tail to wag. The shelter wasn’t sure if his leg had healed so they decided to contract rescue to see if we’d take him, of course we said yes. We didn’t know what we’d be looking at so we had our vet on call for when he came into town and he went right to the vets on Saturday night when he came in. We were not sure what we’d find when we brought Chewbarka out of the crate but he came trotting out and didn’t seem to be in any pain or discomfort but to be safe we kept him at the vets all weekend. On Monday our vet did an xray and he did see that the leg had indeed been broken but it had already healed(green break). It was already healed to the point where nothing more could be done to it. Dr. Story did say it was a little off-set but not where it would cause any problems except “maybe” arthritis as he got older. With that we brought him home and he’s been fine with all the other dogs, likes his foster dad and mom. I’m afraid we’ve spoiled him a little and he does sleep in the big bed under the covers or on your lap when you are watching TV or reading.
He really needs someone that’s going to be around most of the time or take him with them because he’s very attached to his owners(foster parents), we think he’d be fine as an only dog or with another and we think he’d enjoy a fenced in yard. Because of his once broken leg we don’t think a lot of walks or jogging would be good for him but normal activity is fine.
If you are looking for a wire and want a mini than please contact his foster mom to see if this is the dog for you.
FROM THE SHELTER:
Chewbarka is in need of rescue, he is a 2 year old neutered male merle wirehaired Dachshund who weighs 9 pounds. He was brought to us as an owner surrender. His owner saw him get hit by a car a week before, and chose to do nothing about it even though it was obvious that the dog was in pain. As a result of his pain, Chewbarka chewed his tail and that's when the owner decided to surrender him to us.
Chewbarka's tail had to be amputated, and it was also found that he has a break in his left hind leg. We have had him on cage rest in order to allow the break to heal, but unfortunately Chewbarka has started showing signs of frustration from living in a cage, he will attack his toys and bed when a dog walks by and he also growls at some people when they confront the front of his cage, although he's fine when the cage door is opened. Unfortunately this behavior will not show well on our adoption floor, so we feel that a rescue that is foster home-based will be best for him.
Chewbarka still needs 1-2 months of limited activity for his broken leg to continue to heal. You will need to have him regularly evaluated at your vet to monitor the bone healing process.
Chewbarka is an extremely friendly dog who loves everyone he meets (outside of his cage). He can be a little intimidated by other dogs but he coexists with them well, and sometimes will shyly try to play. He also has met a cat and did okay with it.
