Housetrained if on a schedule, pee pad trained for indoors.  Due to her fear issues, she may have accidents until she learns your routine.

Crate trained - yes  Marissa has been sleeping in her crate.

Leash trained:  All most completely.  She likes to go for walks but will try to stay two steps behind you.

Special Needs:  Marissa came into rescue in July from living in puppy mill conditions her entire life.  She is afraid of being picked up, but once you get her into your arms, she calms down and will stay with you for quite a while.  She recently fell asleep in my arms.  Marissa is a healthy eater, but her food must be soft.  Because of the conditions and the low quality of food Marissa was given on the puppy mill, her teeth were rotten and decayed.  All of her teeth had to be pulled.  Her tongue will sometimes hang out the side of her mouth.  This is another thing to be aware of because you don't want her tongue to dry out or freeze in cold weather.  Marissa will need a gentle hand in order for her to feel safe at being a dog and loved pet.

Due to her fear issues, Marissa would not be a good candidate for a home with children under 12.

Marissa currently lives with 4 other dogs (2 Westies, 1 dachshund, and 1 Whippet).  They all get along well and they all get along with the male dog visitors I have had in the house.

I do not know how Marissa would react to cats.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteer that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or up and down the West Coast. We just can't get them from one Coast to the other but some day we hope to have enough volunteers to do that as well for now please look for dogs on your coast.
Out of State and Canadian adopters are welcome. We do not ship our dogs cargo. You will have to make arrangements to pick up the dog or for them to go by ground transport. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN A RESCUE.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
