BIO (11/11/2018):  Hello everyone...meet Abner!!

Abner has been through a lot in his three years on this earth.  He was part of a hoarding situation that involved over 50 dogs.  Because of this, Abner never really learned what it was like to be a dog.  We don’t believe he was abused, but we do believe that he was definitely low down in the pack order because he was/is fearful of just about anyone and anything that is new.  We have never met a dog that was as fearful as Abner.  When he came into his foster home, it was a good two days before he would come near his foster dad.  Even treats could not coax him into getting near.  It took a full week before he would allow his foster dad to pick him up.  When friends would come over to the house, he would run and find a safe place to hide, shaking all over in fear.

What a difference three weeks makes!  He is friendly and loves to sleep in the big bed.  He has begun to play with some of his foster sisters and appears to get along just fine with other dogs when they come over to visit.  This is not to say that he is completely over his past, but it is to say that once you gain his trust, he is the sweetest little dog you would ever want to meet!

At first, he had a hard time with potty training.  Abner will still potty in the house from time to time but that has improved tremendously.  His new home will need to keep him on a schedule and he will do just fine.  He has NEVER soiled his crate!  While he is not the biggest fan of his crate, he has done well with it.  He does prefer being in your lap once he gets to know you.  He gets along with other dogs just fine.

Whoever adopts Abner will need to have a lot of patience in the beginning.  He is most distrustful of new people and new situations.  You will need to let him get to know you on his time schedule.  Once he decides that you are a friend, he will gradually warm up to you and he will become a GREAT dog.  Are you a dachshund savvy person?  Are you a person that would like to complete Abner’s journey to normalcy?  If so, please consider adopting Abner.  He is DEFINITELY worth the investment of your time and love!

Good with Dogs, Good with Older/Considerate Kids Only, Good with Adults, Cratetrained, Timid

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
