This little doll baby’s name is Ginger. She was a breeder dog all of her life. Ginger and her 5 breeder companions were taken to the shelter to be euthanized. The breeder could no longer afford to feed them and selfishly thought they would be better off dead. The shelter coordinator pleaded with the breeder to take them home (which she did) and she would find a dachshund rescue to take them all in. Ginger is a beautiful little red longhair 4-1/2 years old who weighs 8-1/2 pounds. All of the longhair dogs that were rescued from this breeder had awful mats encrusted with feces in their fur. In order to save most of Ginger’s coat the mats were cut out instead of having her shaved. She has a great personality and would love very much to have a home of her own. Her nick name is Miss Paws because she uses her paws like hands. She will reach out to touch you or when she wants to be petted she playfully moves her paws around. She even scoops her food out of her bowl with her paws. Being a breeder dog she is good with other dogs and has no problem with a large dog. She has quickly gotten used sleeping in her foster parents bed at night and is very reluctant to leave it. Every chance Ginger gets she runs in the bedroom and jumps up on the bed. With Ginger’s sweet disposition I have no doubt she would be fine with young children who know how to treat a dog. She would also be alright around a cat although to our knowledge she has not been around one. Since being crated all her life she is not house broken but with a consistent routine it wouldn’t take her long to learn. If you are looking for a constant companion then Ginger is the one. She will be great for someone who can shower her with the attention she has lacked in her prior life. Ginger enjoys being held and cuddling up in your lap. She will enjoy going for walks in the park (once she is leash trained), down the street or just to the mail box. Ginger will be a little shy at first but once she warms up she will be a little love bug. Ginger is currently on heartworm prevention, flea prevention and given all of her vaccines. She has been to the vet recently to have her teeth cleaned and to be spayed. She is naturally crate trained and is microchipped. If you can offer Ginger a loving and stable home please e-mail her foster parents at oscarbcsg@sprintmail.com or fill out the on-line adoption application and specify you are interested in Ginger.Preference will be given to North Carolina applicants but applications from South Carolina and Virginia will also be considered.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
