BIO:

Beauty was rescued from a puppy mill in east Tennessee.  You can see in one of her pictures that she came to our rescue in pretty bad condition.  In the weeks preceding her rescue it was 105 degrees outside (puppy mill dogs are kept outside and usually in deplorable conditions) and you can see in her pictures how matted her coat was.  It must have been unbearable for her.  She was also well into her pregnancy yet weighed only nine pounds.

We immediately started her on a very high-quality food diet and pureed it for her, suspecting her teeth were in bad condition, hence her low weight.  We learned after taking her to her initial vet visit that indeed her teeth were in horrible condition.  Since giving birth to her four pups (three survived), we’ve had her teeth taken care of (many had to be extracted) and she has been spayed.

Although Beauty’s physical condition was heartbreaking, her recovery into being a house dog was a different journey.  It’s amazing how the simple act of love and caring can transform a frightened dog into loving companion.   She was extremely cautious initially yet she and I developed a trust that flowed over to the other members of my family.  She seemed physically relieved after we shaved her fur (it took two hours); she lay quietly while we groomed her.  She has responded very well to the new food and her coat shows it.  She loves to be around the pack, gets on well with our two dachshunds and now wags her tail with delight when we come home (she didn’t move her tail from between her legs for the first two weeks she was with us).  She’s o.k. with crating, and I recommend it for ongoing practice with proper house manners, however, she‘d prefer just to lie quietly at your side.  She barks when the doorbell rings or when she hears people approaching the door; she’s not a nuisance barker.

She has been a protective, caring and nurturing mom to her pups, which says, a lot about her character.  She’s a really great dog who with patience and kindness, will come to relax into life knowing she will have a stable (food, water, shelter) and loving environment.

Puppy mill dogs are not trained; they are caged.  Beauty will benefit from an experienced dachshund owner who can provide her with regulated/scheduled visits to go to the bathroom outside and who can teach her with treats how to sit on command.  She knows ‘up’ (she stands still so you can pick her up).  Name recognition and ‘up’ were taught with food and she’s a very quick study.

Although Beauty is fine with my kids, I think she’d be more relaxed in an all-adult household.  She hears lots of stomping, running and screaming and does o.k. with it most times, but she will bark when it get’s too much.  I can put her in a separate room with me and then she’s fine.

Beauty will need to be kept on a soft food diet.  She doesn’t have many teeth remaining so chewing is difficult.  I will say that this girl loves Baby Belle cheeses.  She creates small tornados with her tail when she hears the wrapper opening.  It was my treat of choice when training her.  She loves them.

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
