BIO: Please read the complete Bio on Ruben so that you are aware of his past.

Ruben came from an animal hoarding case in Alabama. When authorities entered the home, they encountered 80+ animals living in squalid conditions. Almost half of that number had to be euthanized due to their health. This guy did not have a great start in life and it will take a long time and lots of love and attention to bring out all of the potential Ruben has inside. He is a survivor. After clawing his way through life for a couple of years, don't expect that 2 weeks or 2 months are going to completely change him. He will need to gain your trust and you will need to accept that he is always going to be unique in certain aspects. However, we are confident that with the right person(s) and in the proper environment, Ruben is going to reward his people with watching him mature and seeing how love can make a difference in a life.

After Ruben arrived in AADR, we worked with him for a while before determining the he needed care and training above the normal level. AADR reached out to Highland Canine Training Center and they accepted him into their Second Chance Program. Through their efforts we believe Ruben has a chance in life! He was adopted, but he was returned due to some issues. He does not like a busy place and loud noises distress him.  He returned to Highland Canine and has shown great progress, in fact, he is ready for his forever home.

Ruben needs to go to a home  that would have few men coming and going. He has done very well around women with letting them into his life, not as well with men. He sleeps gated in the computer room and does fine but would prefer to be in the bedroom with his foster mom. He is good with other dogs and loves his foster sister.  In the pack, he is submissive and looks for direction from the pack leader.  Once he forms trust with you, his loyalty is unwavering. He's ok on a leash but a fenced in yard would be better. Please consider giving Ruben a wonderful home where he can continue to improve and be the pet he was meant to be.

It is important that his forever home understands his past and his limitations. He will need consistent care and attention to ensure that he is handled in a manner that does not create more hurdles for him. This may scare some people away, but we want the best chance for Ruben and he deserves a home that can provide consistent and caring love to get him through his issues.

More about Ruben...AL

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
