BIO:  Huckleberry came from a small rescue in Texas. He is currently being treated for heartworms and will be ready for his new home in about two weeks. His potential adopter needs to know that Huckleberry has trust issues, most likely because he was abused. If you are willing to wait for him to realize you are trustworthy, he’s the sweetest boy possible.

Huckleberry has been with his foster mom now for almost two months, and he asks to get in her lap so he can snooze while she’s having her coffee or just chillin’. He also lets her pick him up to put him in a crate or in the car. Huckleberry is okay with his foster dad too, for the most part, but gets anxious when Dad tries to put Huckleberry in a crate. Maybe his abuse stems from being in a crate. We wish he could talk to tell us, but we can only assure him that he is safe and will never be abused again.

Our must-haves for adorable Huckleberry include:

  • A fenced yard
  • Someone with patience and who understands that gaining his trust will not happen overnight, but it will come
  • More of a quiet home with few visitors and no children coming into the home
  • No apartments, condos, or high-rises

If you are willing to put in the time, Huck is well worth the effort! He’s a smart boy and will play with toys a little but mostly loves to be in his foster mom’s lap. You can’t rush him in gaining his trust. If you do, he’ll snap, and that would only set him back. So, if you want to help this little one grow and have his best life possible, please consider Huck as a member of your family. If you aren’t able to invest the time, then please pass on him.

============== Information for All Dogs/Adopters ==============

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund’s back or get bitten.

If you have questions about this dog, please feel free to contact the foster home at the email address listed on the bio form.  They have the most up-to-date information concerning the dog and would be happy to answer any questions about the animal.

There will be an additional $60 fee added for a required Health Certificate if traveling out of the state in which they are being fostered.

We will not adopt into CT, RI, NH, ME, or MA due to strict laws regarding importation of dogs into those states.  If you have any issue with this, you will need to take this up with your legislatures.

To understand the adoption process through AADR, please review the Adoption Information on our home page.  Transportation options are outlined on that page in Step 3.

Click this link to apply: https://www.allamericandachshundrescue.org/apply, it will take you to the application form.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend.  We have volunteers who will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast or Midwest.  We just can't get them from one coast to the other.  Please look for dogs on your coast.
