She needs to have someone spend the time to socialize her(taking her places to meet strangers). That way she'll learn that all people are ok not just her family. WILLOW is not a barker and gets along with other dogs and we think she would be fine with cats but small busy children may scare her so older kids over 12 yrs would be fine. She needs a home that just understands that it'll take a while for her to warm up but she loves to sleep in the big bed and she'll cuddle with the other dogs. We think she would be better going into a home with other dachshund so she can learn from them. She is working on housetraining but it would help if you had a doggie door and for sure a fenced in yard. AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
