Emma is an owner surrender and is being fostered in FL. She is such a sweet little gal. She is just a little burst of sunny energy. When she gets really excited she actually bounces across the ground as if she were a little jackrabbit. She is an extremely comical gal and loves to be goofy. She was timid when she first came to us but once she settled in she quickly opened up. She loves my five year old and will run and play forever with her. But as much as she loves my 2yr old she doesn’t do as well with her, so I would suggest adopting if you have at least school age or older children. Even though she does well with older children she would definitely be happiest as an only child to someone who had a lot of time and energy to spend with her. However, she has bonded very closely with my other dachshund and is friendly with most other dogs, even large breeds, so I would say she would fit in with another dog just fine. Emma definitely tries to take charge and has to always be the center of attention and will do whatever it takes to get serious “me” time. So keep this in mind when adopting her as she will definitely need some serious time and attention to help her settle in. She just soaks up attention as if she could never get her fill and is only happy if she is in the spotlight. I assume this personality trait comes from a neglected background. But how anyone could have ever neglected her before I don’t know since she just lives to be loved and give love in return. Emma loves to play catch and will run for hours after a ball or other toy. A fenced in yard is a must for her since the love of running prevents her from staying put without one. She loves cats but believes they are for chasing and aggravating so unless you have strong willed, aggressive cats, Emma will always be running after them. She is crate trained and loves to have that as a little space of her own. She will let you know if she has to go out to potty but if you miss the clue or she feels like she is not getting her due attention she could have an accident. But I think once she is settled in with a new family and realizes their uncondional love I think she, especially if she is an only child, will understand she doesn’t have to have an accident to gain attention. Lots of positive renforcement is key. She is UTD on all shots and is current on frontline and heartgurd. If you are interested in adopting Emma please go online to www.ssdr.org and fill out an online application and be sure to put her name on the app.Out of state and Canadian adoptions are welcome and a home visit is required. We also micro chip all our dogs and must pass the cost on to the adopter. It is only $10.00. Thank you for your interest in a rescue.

Not Good with Cats, Is Not Good with Kids
AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.
Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
