BIO:  Martha was found as a stray in the middle of the road in Nashville, TN.  A Good Samaritan picked her up so she would not get hit by a car.  They tried in vain to find the owner but no one stepped up so they contacted us to see if we would take her and find her the right home.

We do believe that Martha was hit multiple times because she does flinch if you have fast hand movement near her head.  She also doesn’t like much to be picked up.  We think this will get better as she learns to trust and know she’s safe.  The Good Samaritan only had her 9 days before turning her over to us.

Martha had a dental and she lost 11 teeth.  She also had a couple missing as well, but that has not stopped her from eating.  She also had several moles removed from her head and that’s why she’s wearing a soft cone (in her picture) so she doesn’t scratch them open while they heal.

Martha is VERY housebroken and will let you know either by whining or barking that she needs to go out and will then bark to get back in!  She is so very sweet and needs a home where she won’t be abused any longer and is allowed to live out her life in peace.

She will stare at you while you eat and even whine to get you to give her food, but you must be strong so she can lose the weight she’s put on.  Martha is on Thyroid medications for low thyroid but this could be because of all the weight she carries.  Once the extra weight is off, she may not need the medicine any longer, but she will require T-4s until she reaches her ideal weight.

Please give this girl a chance at a better life with someone that will care for her and help her to trust again.

Good with Dogs, Is Not Good with Kids, Leashtrained, Cratetrained

AADR does not recommend dachshunds for families with children under 5, or families planning to have children during the dog's lifetime. Dachshunds are often not patient with little kids, and kids can accidentally hurt a dachshund's back or get bitten.

Please don't let the distance stand in your way of finding your newest best friend. We have volunteers that will help your "new friend" get up and down the East Coast and mid-west. We just can't get them from one coast to the other. For now, please look for dogs on your coast.
